Dog Friendly Beaches


Dorset’s Jurassic coastline stretches 95 miles and over 185 million years. It is also first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site – which includes the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon.

Dogs are welcome on all beaches…but not always all year round. Here is a list of Beaches in the area and there Dog-friendly status.

Abbotsbury

Dogs are allowed.

Bournemouth

Between 1 May and 30 September dogs are allowed to the west of Durley Chine and east of Fisherman's Walk up to Hengistbury Head.

Bridport area

Burton Bradstock Beach - No dogs between 1 May and 30 September, except on East Beach.
West Bexington Beach - dogs allowed in a restricted area.
Eype Beach - dogs permitted.
West Bay - no dogs allowed between 1 May to 1 October, except in the port area where they must stay on a lead.
Cogden - dogs allowed.

Christchurch

Between 1 May and 30 September no dogs on Avon Beach, Friars Cliff Beach and Highcliffe Beach between Groynes H4 and H8. Dogs are allowed between the wave wall at end of Friars Cliff Beach and Groyne H4 at Highcliffe Beach, Mudeford Sandbank and Gundimore Beach.

Lyme Regis

Between 1 April and 31 October no dogs on Lyme Regis's front beach and on leads for rest of year. Dogs allowed on Monmouth Beach, Cobb Gate and East Beach. Charmouth West Beach, no dogs from 1 May to 30 September, Charmouth East Beach, no dogs in July and August between 10am-6pm. Seatown Beach-no dogs.

Poole

No dogs from 1 May to 30 September on the main beaches, but dogs are allowed on the beach all year round at Branksome Dene and at the west end of Sandbanks beach.

Purbeck

Various restrictions apply at the Studland Beaches - for further information download the Beach Guide.
Dogs are allowed all year at Kimmeridge, Worbarrow Bay, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Man O' War Beaches.

Swanage

No Dogs from 1 May to 30 September on the main beach, but dog walking is allowed elsewhere (opens in a new window) all year.

Weymouth

There is a dog area all year round at the Weymouth Pavilion end of the beach and Preston Beach.
No dogs on remainder of beach from 1 May to 30 September.

A super pub in the heart of Charmouth. Dogs are allowed on leads all year round. There is also a children’s play area.
